All are excellent cameras, I believe. But don't discount the small size of the Canon S30, S40, S45, and now the S50. They all offer full manual control, and although I can only speak directly for the S30, they take great photos.
Okay, okay, so the macro on these cameras is not the greatest. It is, in my opinion, their one glaring weak point. Now, that said, 31 inches? Maybe if your not using the "macro mode," which they all have.
If you look through my images most all of them were taken in macro mode. Closest focusing distance at full zoom is about 12-15 inches, closest at the widest angle is maybe 5 inches, if that. These aren't numbers from a chart mind you, but from a lot of macro experience with the S30. And since the lens is the same, it should apply to the other models as well.

I´ve had a lot of digital cameras through the years and my C5050 is the best I´ve ever had. It takes as good pictures as my E20. And it´s SO easy to use. You can use the perfect function automatic settings or do everything or parts manual. And you have the super macro setting that brings you almost as close as you can get. AND don´t forget the aparture down to 1.8!
I really like my C4000Z. In super macro mode you can get as close as 2 cm. And it does have full manual options. The only drawback I've encountered so far is no bulb shutter setting...
