All my experience with gel has been in live theatre, as opposed to photographic lighting. I'd say you should be fine using it though, just don't let it touch any exposed bulbs (tends to melt).
Remember that you can double it up and combine different colours - but if you've got access to the entire range then you should have no problems anyway. I wonder if the frosted gels would be of use, or if they would be too close to the light source to really help (hmm, might be good for macro shots with very close light).
