She was the first African-Americam woman elected to the US Congress where she served for 14 years. I had the privilege of meeting her a few times. I'll never forget her warmth. I wish the world had more like her.
As more of a statement than a serious challenge she decided to run for President in 1972 to balance out the candidacy of Gov. George Wallace of Alabama. And quite a juxtaposition it was. The poster boy for segration and the South opposing the plain-talking, no-nonsence woman from New York City. When Wallace was shot by a would-be assasin in Laurel, Maryland Representive Chisholm showed her compassion by visiting her arch enemy in the hospital. After she got by his surprised handlers the govenor was receptive, and local legend has it that they cried in each others arms that night.
She was a courageous pioneer, a moving orator, an intelectual and a pragmatist but also a charming and endearing personality who always had time to listen to the little people who were her constituents.
