I'm thinking about doing some advertising work for
a friend of a friend. This would mainly be taking
some product type shots that would then get made
up into flyers/ promo type pieces. I think initially
about 700 copies or so on postcards to be distributed.

What I'm trying to understand is

1/ what sort of contract should I draw up - usage rights,
ownership, etc.

2/ how much to charge/ how to work out how much to charge

3/ If anyone has standard contracts I could just use

Any suggestions/ hints/ pointers ?

Gordon, I read your post but unfortunately I have no clue about this type of thing. Just started myself and wouldn't even know where to look for it. Sorry I couldn't help, but don't want you to feel ignored due to no replies. If you have a profile search thing like AOL does, you could type photography in the occupation field and see what comes up and ask specific people that do that. Not sure how many people sell there work here, haven't really heard much about it yet. Hope you can find the answers you are looking for. Good luck.

I found a good book that had a bunch (30?) of photography contracts in it along with a CD-ROM at a local Barnes and Noble. Tried to do a quick search for it online, but wasn't able to locate one that sounded like it had the right title at the right price.

There are also a number of books out there that offer guidelines on pricing your work.

I know it doesn't offer you any direct advice, but I'd strongly suggest going to a big local bookstore and browsing through their photogrpahy reference books and see if you find some that suit what you want to do.

Probably THIS BOOK. I have seen it and I think it would be an excellent place to start...

Gordon,
i'm a graphic designer and have worked with photographers in many different situations as well as using stock photography on a regular basis. there are lots of variables. i have shot some simple product type shots for advertising and web usage. at the time i knew average photographers in this area were charging $500 a day. i charged a half day because it only took about 3 hours. so $250. i believe typically the photographer keeps any negatives or original shots(this is all negotiable of course). i know as a designer we turn over the final art which is usually print ready files. we never give layerd files or any kind of editable work if at all possible. if i were you i would go to a local reputable camera shop and ask them the going rate for something like that.
the usuage is pretty small so you could probably have a fairly simple contract.
good luck and remember not to charge too little. take time and try to figure out how much time you are going to have in the whole job, the shoot as well as post processing.
