Hello everybody! After reading the comments on my image in the last challenge i realized that nobody understood what I was trying to communicate becuse of unfamiliarity with a kerosene stove ( which is one of the oldest subjects, still in use). If I write the titile "Kerosene stove", it makes it too abvious and I am unable to communicate the idea that I am trying to. (I have added the intent of the image I submitted in the comments on the image- Please have a look). If I give a title like "Bare necessities", my subject and intent is not understood. So do you think that at times one should be allowed to write something more than a title for an image?

I have to admit, I didn't know what it was. I liked the picture though...
Alas for my insurlar american limitations. Apologies Sanandan, I've never seen a kerosene stove or delt with a street vender.
lol I was just as shocked when one someone said they did not recognize the subject of my picture (the interior of an aging barn -- very western romantic icon).
It really shouldn't matter what it was, it was old and you composed a good shot.
Sanandan, thanks for all the explanations. I really got some idea what this was, although I hadn't the foggiest it is still being used in India :). Nor did I have any problem with the title. Nor did I have any problem with the fact that you showed old and new. I gave you only a 5 because the black background shape really annoyed me. I had no clue what it was and it was very distracting. I really wanted to focus my eyes on the lovely kerosene stove but they got always diverted to the red and white lettering with Son (Sony?). I also presumed that since the new was shown with the old, it had some significance and I could no figure it out. Had you just shown the old kerosene stove, I would have given this picture a much better score. Honestly, in my mind, the title had nothing to do with the problem.
Please don't be offended Sanandan, but I really don't think it was an issue of 'getting it'. A lot of people are assumming that when their photos don't do real well. I personally think it is really an issue of composition, contrast, color and all the other things that make for a great photo. I don't think it really matters if we can recognize the elements in a photo to score it well as long as it appeals to us photographically. My current photo is sucking and after looking at it very subjectively I can understand why. It's boring, and I'll gladly take my lumps because I have learned from it. Some photos just don't connect with people and that's all there is to it. Just hang in there, I'm sure you will do well.
Sanandan, this is the first photo of yours that I haven't loved! I didn't understand it at all when I saw it, but even with the explanation, it doesn't have the impact of your other three, even to one of your fans :). But please don't give up being subtle and putting all that thought into your photos. They are very beautiful and meaningful.
