I don't know how many fellow dpc'ers are heavy metal fans but last night a guitar hero of mine was shot and killed on stage. Darrel "Dimebag" Abbot was the guitar player for the old band Pantera and had recently started a new band called Damageplan. Its a very sad day. Any one else have thoughts comments??

yes i got a message on my on my machine early this morning, so i checked out the report on mtv.com. very very sad indeed. this makes me so mad. carzy nutbags out there that just want to shoot up a place. and what the hell is wrong with their security, first of all the dude got into the building with the gun.... and on stage!
im worried how this is going to impact concerts in the future, especially metal concerts. i dont know i hate this so much.
I'm with you, I don't understand how he even got a gun in there let alone on the stage. The last concert I went to was Metallica and they did pat-downs on everybody. Whats next? Who knows? All I know is I lost a hero and the world lost a great guitar player. I feel so bad about this. I also feel so bad for his brother who had to set behind his drum kit and watch all this happen in front of him. Thank you so very much for replying Kat. It helps to know someone else feels the same.
Yes... this definitely bothered me. Being a 30 year old, I listened heavily to Pantera in the 90's, and I have all their stuff. It is pretty messed up things like this can happen.
They are still piecing the story together, and have no motive, but there is one account that the gunman exchanged words that had something to do with the Pantera break up. Of course right now this is all speculation, but sooner or later we will know what the sick motive was for this one.
This also on the anniversary (Dec 8th) of John Lennon being killed.
There are some sick people in this world that don’t have any concern for a human life. I did not keep up with this group or Dimebag however I do remember the group ‘Pantera’. It is a sad day when anyone looses his or her life. I feel bad for him along with the three others; lets don’t forget them that lost their life last night as well.
I know what you mean vince. I'm 34 and in the 90's I was in a band that played some Pantera songs. I heard the same thing about it being about the Pantera break-up. It shows how crazy some people are, I mean yeah it was a bummer they broke up but its not like they were dead, they could have, and were making great music just not with Pantera. I am so mad about this. This is all so sad.

of course not, can you imagine though anyone who has been to a concert with an open floor knows how you push yourself to the front to get on the gate and when you get there you sometimes cant leave depending on how many people are pushing behind you. imagine someone starts shooting and you cant even duck. i know my shoe has came off a couple times from people stepping on my feet and i never retrieved them because i couldnt get down to get them.
I agree dp. Not only Dimebag but the three others and their families too. Not to mention the poor people that had to witness something like that. Now how many people will be afraid to even go to a metal show? or any show for that matter.

And you know... Damageplan still did some Pantera covers... so it is really sensless.
i just read it at work today on the bbc. i am gutted he is one of my guitar heros, one of the reasons i started playing. He incredibly talented and will be soarly missed.
I read about it this morning. What a terrible tragedy. I am going to put on Cemetery Gates now in memory... I did get to see them live in 1991. He was so talented!!! This is so sad :(
I was familiar with one of the men that was killed.
Providing security for the band was Mayhem (Jeff Thompson).
We were not friends - but I was familiar with him through attending Renaissance Faires. My impression of him was that he seemed intimidating due to his size and boisterousness - but he was really a teddy bear.
