Well, tomorrow morning I'm off to the Yucatan! Woohoo!!! I've got my new Tenba ProDigital backpack stuffed full of photo gear, including my new Canon 17-40mm lens, and a laptop. My tripod is packed in a check-in bag with my clothes. If I can't get some decent shots then I'm not coming back. :)
This will be our first real vacation in about 12 years, and we're very happy to be leaving rainy, foggy, depressing Oregon. I've got my fingers crossed for warm weather. I feel the need to burn in the sun.
This will also be the first time that I've been away from this place since I signed up. I'm going to miss you guys a lot... but not enough to keep me here. :) See ya's when I get back.
I highly recommend Coba. In my opinion, the best ruins (not as crowded as Chichen Itza). Plus, they're in the middle of the jungle. I assume you're going to Cancun (Quintana Roo)? I love that place.
One thing you must try though, the the drink that is my namesake. Ask for it at any sort of establishment that serves liquer:

Xtabentun: A liqueur originating with the Mayan production of honey made from the Xtabentun flower. Hmmm... I'll have to try that. Thanks!
X is normally a "sh" sound, right? Is it pronounced shtab-en-tun?

Ah, well then scratch that about Coba. I've never been to Belize, but I've always wanted to go. Good diving place, I hear.
Waaaaaaaaa........ all this talk about warm exotic places. With all the freezing rain we are getting here, I'll be lucky to make it to the end of my driveway.

Great shots Michael, thanks for posting. I'm heading for the Eastern Caribbean January 9th and was reluctant to take my SLR. I was going to only bring my Fuji4900Z. Any issues with your gear? What about when you went out snorkeling or the like?

I didn't have any problems. When we were snorkeling we left all of our gear (camera equip, clothes, money, etc) on the boat and nobody even touched it. I bought a throwaway underwater camera for when we were in the water.
I bought a Tenba camera\laptop backpack to carry my camera gear and laptop in, and I took it on the plane with me. The airport security bozos made me take the laptop out of the backpack, but that wasn't a big deal.
Going to a place like that, I would have left my clothes behind before I'd leave my 10D. :)
I'd say take yours with you and get some really good photos. Just remember to keep an eye on it. Have a great trip!
Thanks Michael. I'll take my D-70. I guess I was over cautious because it is new. I took my old Fuji all over Italy without problems. Just had to keep an eye on it as you say.
My fav was the beer on the beach shot--it's really cool. I tried to copy the name to paste in here and the "copyright" protection wouldn't let me LOL.
How did you like the 17-40 was for range? Most of those look like they are wide enough that that's what you used. Still tempted to get one, even though I like my Sigma 18-125, which has a lot more range.

I love the 17-40. It's a lot wider than my 35-350 and sharper too. The range is pretty good for a walk-around lens. I wanted to use my tripod and mirror lockup to get a better idea of how sharp it really is, but I was too busy having fun.
