Its, nice, although the composition would look better if the little red X was not dead center. DOF is alright but it could be better. Maybe it would look better in BnW? ;)

This is one that really needs a frame of some kind when you see it on a black background -- but other than that, this is beautiful, John. Really nice range of tones that brings out the subtle texture of the flower. Mentally, I keep wanting to flip it around and see it from the other side -- but that's another picture. *grin*

Do you normally look for flaws? [/i]
Ha...DPC Syndrome. My boyfriend and I were talking about this the other night. Actually, I'm trying to look at the *photo* like I used to, rather than looking at the minutiae. I'm trying to balance my scores with emotion weighing in as heavily as the technical details.

I'm trying to break myself of the same problem... I used to look at photos for what was good about them :)
Does anyone have any comments about the stem on this flower disappearing in the corner of the frame?
This is a particular issue that a lot of the photographers in my camera club bring up quite frequently. They prefer things exit and enter the frame somewhere other than the corner... the corner 'area' is ok, but not right from the corner...
Call me strange, but I think it 'points' the eye to look outside of the photo...but only if you're concentrating on that area. The stem leads my eye up to the flower in this image so it's not a problem for me.
I agree with that as well... the stem leads me into the photo rather than out of it in this case... I think this image would be equally impressive if the subject was rotated a few degrees counter clockwise as well...

I think there are many subjects that you would definitely NOT use a corner "exit or entry", but for this subject, the "v" of the corner is "pointing" down the stem, giving a subconscious feel of flow and uninterruption. Just an "artistic" POV.

Sometimes people talk about that because they've heard that it is more sophisticated, than something that follows the 'basic' main diagonal type rules/ suggestions.
Quite often I've seen critiques that are so formulaic as to be totally banal - "blah blah blah, I was told not to like this hence I don't" rather than actually bothering to think about if they like it or not.
That said, the stem in the corner thing works well in this case I think because of the square frame. The sides are even, so the symmetry works quite well. If it was a rectangular frame, it would be more balanced if it came out of the side, rather than the corner.
Square frames are quite often more suitable for certain subjects, and it certainly works well in this case.
As an aside, it would be good if the dimension restrictions on here were eased, different crops quite often dramatically change how a picture looks and I don't know that I really see the need for the current constraint.
Size constraints will be changing very soon i believe... Drew has mentioned this several times... I think that the size restrictions will be limited to 640 pixels on the long side, so possibly, 640x640 with a max size of 125 or 150k will be the idea... not exactly sure at this point tho...
