I'm just guessing here, but maybe the out of focussness is due to glare from the sun. What happens if you go into manual and set the shutter speed even quicker?
Mag told me the other day that to get maximum sharpness, even when using a tripod and remote, use the quickest shutter speed you can without being under-exposed.
This small tip has helped my get much sharper photos, even on still life's with a tripod and timer.
