I do quite a bit of travelling, 99% of the time on my own. My problem is I'm RARELY ever in any of the pics because obviously I'm the one taking them. I know what I look like and I know that I have other great photos of the places that i've visited, but it would be nice to have pics of me there, standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, minding the gap in the London tube, kissing the Blarney Stone or what have you. My solution is to bring along my Kodak DX 4900 and hopefully work up the courage to ask someone to take my picture. I really dont trust anyone with my camera so how crazy do you think the idea of a second camera is? Just wondering.
Would there be a problem using a tripod? Compose the scene, set your camera timer and make a mental note of where you will position yourself in the scene. Press the shutter and then take your position. Voila! you're in the photo you just took. Show us sample if you did it this way.
That would be an option, but a very time consuming one. I dont want perfect pictures, I just want snap shots of me. I think carrying a small point and shoot is much easier than carrying a tripod.

I am also cautious about giving my camera to anyone but often want a picture of both Pete and I together.
My solution? I look for someone with an equally expensive looking camera and ask them. Not only is it unlikely they'll run off with mine but it's also more likely (one hopes) that they won't chop our heads off!
Has always worked for me.
If I see couples in a famous place I also will go up to them and offer to take a photo of them together on their own camera and then once I've done that I occasionally ask if they will return the favour.
So hopefully I'll be back soon with some pics of Pete and I in the middle of all those penguins!

I carry 3 cameras with me wherever I go (yes even a quick run out to the local shop for a bottle of milk) and I've not even entered the world of dSLR yet.
I think it's a good idea, also giving people a compact camera rather than a technical beast is much easier for them. Although I do like Kavey's idea :)
I tried to hand off my camera a couple times and the photos were really blurry and it's not always possible to find someone so I just carry my tripod with me and use the timer. I agree though, it can be a pain. Payoff's good. I've got about 20 great photos of my hubby and me from our recent vacation to the Canyon, Hoover Dam and Vegas. Great for the scrapbook!
