If you weren't into photography what would you be doing with all the money you'd save? And have you ever gotten yourself into financial difficulty (either big or small) because you spent too much money on equipment instead of paying bills?
I'm just curious..I know 50% of my debt is photography related.
I've never had any photography related debt. I've always waited until I could afford to pay cash for everything. However, if I didn't have the hobby it would be frittered away on other things I don't need I'm sure.
I've just started photography and my wife knows I'm a hobby-whore so spending money on the newest hobby doesn't normally sit well with her.
But she saw how much I was loving it and I promised I'd sell my bmx (last hobby) before I put the money towards a new Digital Rebel. Sure enough, I sold my bike and got my Rebel and haven't looked back since!
Past hobby expenditures have included music equipment (guitars, pedals, amps, recording stuff), collecting atari games, bonsai equipment, latin books, golf clubs, part of an r/c airplane ...I'm convinced my photography hobby is here to stay, though!
If it weren't for photography, my time/money would move on towards another hobby...most likely a greater devotion to gardening or a new snowboard.
I should add that I'm in debt since I don't make enough money from my fulltime job to pay my bills let alone by a $2k camera lol..gotta spend money to make money. And for me, gotta take risks to get outta my rut.
I would probably be spending my days playing with fish tanks, and various other pets :) Once I buy my next house I shall be working on an 80 gallon saltwater setup. Have the tank and most of the supplies, it's the fish and upkeep that are costly.

more $$$ into my telescope stuff, but half of that would be photo gear anyways.
Im not in debt due to my hobbies. I make sure I save for it as it allows. Bills and food come first, the toys are a low prority so it can take me a while to get the things i want to have.
