As I read many of the comments around this site about photographs, I wonder how many people have calibrated their monitors? If you are interested in color calibration hardware, it is now cheaper than ever. $140 USD at BHphoto [link below] will get you perfect calibration with hardware optical tools. For full disclosure, I use ColorVision Spectro Pro 2 at work and at home.
I now calibrate several times a day if editing or voting. This is because the ambient light in the room changes depending on whether it's sunny or cloudy, whether the sun is in the east or the west, or if it's dark.
Adobe Gamma is "okay" but to do it right (and expensively) you want a Spyder. Depends on what's at stake. Are you making a livelyhood that depends on accurate color ... or just hobbying around?

Definitely just (an expensive) hobby to go along with all my other (very expensive) hobbies (SCUBA, flying, guns, children, wife.....oops, I digress........)

No, just a hobby for me. Calibrate with Adobe Gamma. Takes 2 minutes.
