Thankyou :) I was really thrilled with all the comments on my entry into Bizarre Nature challenge, especially when you consider the number of challenge entries there were to vote on in the last week.
Just thought I'd show you our national icon.....the kiwi. It was the first time I've even had the priviledge to take a photo of one. They're nocturnal so very rarely seen out in the daylight. This little fellow was up at the local bird recovery as he had lost one of his feet(which is how I got his pic) He's recovered now and is due for release on a safe island.
Getting his photo was a bit of a challenge in itself as the cage was kept low light, he didn't want to stand still and couldn't use a flash or extra lights. Used the Sony 717, ISO 200.....and was lucky.
They're quite big.....bit smaller than a turkey, only a lot rounder, fairly ungainly, can move quickly when they're scared but have no way of defending themselves from predators. Their long bill is only any use to poke and prod into the ground after worms. Daytime vision is very poor as they're usually only out at night.
Good effort Sue as you say these guys are hard to photograph, being a protected species, My one featued in the "Communication" challengeis a little more user friendly!!!LOL. BTW our Labradors Mother is a Kiwi recovery dog working for DOC. Any way congrat on a great shot worth all the trouble getting.

Got a few pics of a native wood pigeon who had just come in after colliding with power lines...he's since been released
and a harrier hawk with a broken wing. He was the most beautiful creature I've ever seen......had to keep quite a distance from him as he was so worried about people coming close.

Do you have any pictures of one of those. At christmas in NZ I tried to photograph one of those, but they are impossible. At least with my equipment they were.

Fantails are way too fast to photograph, I tried that once before myself, they just don't keep still :)
