This is undoubtedly user error, but what the heck happened to my ruler tool? It used to be with the eyedropper thingie, but now it's gone. My Photoshop updated yesterday, and the whole view changed, again. Why does it do that??
Anyway, if you can point me in the right direction of the ruler tool location, my horizons will thank you!
At the bottom of your toolbar on the left is 3 dots: click and hold on that to reveal a drop-down list of ALL the tools and select the ruler there. After you do that the ruler will live there by default. If you want to switch to some other obscure tool on that list, click and hold on the ruler and the list will reappear.
I only recently discovered that one can find any tool using the search button at the top right. Very useful when something moves or my memory fails me.

The only problem is if you search for "Level" or "Leveling tool" you get, well, Levels. Which is not what I saw. But I will find it again. I reinstalled a plugin and now every time I open Photoshop, it is different. Every single time. I think it's playing with me.....
thanks Robert for that tip about the three dots and opening all the tools .. i'd been in there before but hadnt got totally familiar with it ..
anyway .. i use a lot of shortcuts .. and if you are on a mac you can bring the ruler in by hitting command/R .. i'm pretty sure thats control/R on a pc .. you deselect it by hitting command/R again .. you can 'select' lots of the tools using shortcuts btw .. so much easier than taking your curser all the way up to the tool menu ..lol..
for most of the tools you only have to hit a key on your keyboard and dont have to use the command as well ..
i use shortcuts now so much that i have forgotten how to use the 'normal' methods .. ;)

I do all my adjustments in LR which comes with the PS package. Is is best for cropping and levelling.
The term is "straighten" In the new version on PS is in crop tool.
Search in help for straighten in PS also finds it.
thanks for that Tiberius .. i use the skew, distort, perspective and warp when i want to straighten things .. which is a lot of the time .
i am going to check out your straightening suggestion ..
just did .. and its great as a crop/straighten tool .. but i like to scale things up and then do the skew,distort,warp etc .. so i have the 'image' outside the canvas area just in case i want to change what i've done .. rather than cropping ..
i'm always interested in hearing better and quicker ways to do things tho ..
as my knowledge leaves a lot to be desired .. :)

I use Lightroom for that, and for most of the editing actually. Then open in PS, if needed. I usually use PS nowadays for cloning out unwanted parts, apply NIK filters and, rarely, and combining images.
