It's been 5 weeks now since I haven't worked and I know how desperate/restless my clients (and y'all) are getting...so here is some advice on at home haircuts, bangs etc...should you have a "precision" haircut - well - your just up a creek with no paddle!!! Sorry!
General Equipment:
Good Comb - with close teeth
Water Bottle - to spray/wet the hair down
Scissors - Straight Edge *
- Thinning Shears * (Blending)
Trimmer - One like you use for shaving
Start with CLEAN WET HAIR!!! You can shower off after words.
Look up a YouTube on how to cut your own hair at home - there are literally thousands of them...
You can find decent Scissors for "at home use" for $15-30 - Go for middle of the road - don't go for the cheapest. Also - look for a "shorter" blade - 5.5" any longer and you could loose a finger (or ear)...lol
And if you find that your just not brave enough - use a headband, clip, hat or any other method for getting those bangs out of your way - cause - let's face it "who's gonna know"!!! (I really, really want emoji's!!!)
I request documentation (picture evidence) - so that I can be duly horrified/proud!!! lol
I just cut my own hair this past weekend but mine's not particularly hard. I just used a trimmer with a #1 guide for the sides and then used a #3 to blend into the top which is a small bit longer. I just hope the back is even. hah.
How do you cut hair on the back of your own head.....
yours is fairly short right Joanna? I'd use thinning shears - BC you will "shatter" your edges vs a "straight" blunt cut - if you reach to the back of your head (I'm right handed) you can pull your hair up between your fingers and "gage" the length that you want to keep (moving your hand away from your head) and lay the scissors next to your straight fingers and clip that away...it will take several strokes of the scissors - therefore creating the ragged edge that I think you wear...then work your fingers around your head.
In the front hairline (on yourself) comb your hair forward (so it is horizontal with your shoulders)...then determine how much you want to take off and "point cut" (straight) into that area by about a 1/2" - this will create a nice layer in the front and create that "shattered" look - I tend to not look in the mirror - my brain (what brain I do have) tends to fight with what my hands are doing but if I bend forward and "feel" the hair (length - usually I can see it) then I trim away - bear in mind...you can always take off more later - think small little bits

By "Right Handed" - I mean that I use my scissors in my right hand - hair in the left...

Ya - NOT so much - look at it this way - you invest a little into this and it's probably less than what you were paying for 1 haircut - and I'm gonna bet you'll need more than 1 haircut before this is all done!

Funny story - I'm of Russian Decent (2nd Generation) - My Uncle Pete looked like a typical balding russian mob with brow hair that could be BRAIDED!!! I came home once to Michigan (I live in Florida) and he said to me - Janine, Janine...you have to trim my hair...I said - but Uncle Pete YOU have NO hair - he said - NO, no these (indicating his brows)...ha ha - he was the sweetest man I've even known...
ETA: - Gentlemen - Don't forget to trim the brows too!!! Mind you - you might need a weedeater by now!!! Use your best judgement!

I once saw some guys working with a power hedge-trimmer on the end of a 12-foot pole -- you could work at a safe distance ... probably doesn't qualify as "best judgment" though ... :-(
I am BALD so find a bit of oil on a soft cloth gives the pate a nice shine ..
Another funny story which again includes my Uncle Pete - My parents had a very high book case as the back of our Kitchen sink and counters. My Uncle Pete came for one of his visits - he was leaning against the bookcase/cabinet and I (age 5 ish) pulled a chair up, climbed up and proceeded to ask him to bend his head forward...I took the sleeve of my shirt and "rubbed/polished" his head...then pronounced it nice n shiny..wink
