So I've got a photography job. But whenever I send a photo through email (theyre using outlook) or upload it to their DAM system (image relay) the colors are previewing all wrong. Everything looks muddy and awful. Yet when you download the file, everything is fine. The marketing person thinks it's a problem with my setup, because my photos are the only ones that do that.
Please, please help. Everything that I send out looks horrid until they actually download it and use it. I would much rather the previews are representative of the actual photos!
not sure where to look for that. When I go to image -- > mode it's set to RGB.
When I save as in photoshop, ICC prophoto rgb is selected.
Try this:
- Take one of the problem photos, open it in Ps, choose Edit>Convert to Profile and select sRGB as the destination space. Its listed as "sRGB IEC61966-2.1"
- Click OK, then save the image as a different file name so you can track it as the one that is in the sRGB space
- Send this file, and see if it displays properly for them.
Look under Edit > Color Spaces ... more choices there than you'll want to deal with ...
That's where I was looking -- and it's set to the right thing. But when I go to save as and change to jpeg, it's defaulting to prophoto rgb or weird things like that.
I only have a pretty old version of PS (on a Mac) so the settings may not match (I don't see ProRGB at all). Maybe you can post a screen-shot of your color settings and I can see what the options are. I'm out for the next 3-4 hours but I'll look when I get back ...
The working space and the profile assigned to the photo are two different things. If you have a photo that is assigned the Prophoto RGB profile and you open it, and your working space is sRGB, then Ps has to figure out how to display colors that are possible in the larger Prophoto space and display them in the smaller sRGB space.
Under Edit>Color Settings you can check a box to have Ps tell you when there is a mismatch. A mismatch isn't always a problem, but it is not an ideal state. Lightroom uses the Prophoto space on export as a default, but you can change it to sRGB if you want to be safe. There is also a setting there to choose how Ps deals with a mismatch, for example you can choose to convert the image to the working space.
ETA: I would recommend that you work in sRGB unless you have specific reasons to use another space, and fully understand the implications of doing so. I use sRGB exclusively, even though it is a smaller color space. I don't feel knowledgeable enough to use the larger spaces and have to convert for a printer or a customer (though for me customers are about as common as unicorns).
