So... I'm doing photography with a lot of funky lighting situations. If I know the color is off, but don't know what it should be, how do you determine how to fix it?

I've been looking for areas that I know should be white, and I click on the white tool in the RAW editor, but when I click on the white area, many times it comes up with something completely weird, wrong, etc.

How do you go about doing color corrections?

It probably would have helped to have set a custom white balance (shooting a white/gray card under the lights you're using) at the time ...

I use a primitive method for correcting color cast using Curves adjustment layers and analyzing the colors using Photoshop's Info window in CMYK mode. Do what you've been doing by sampling something which should be white, and then use a curve in the "opposite" color channel to correct it.

For example, if the white area is yellowish (often with my camera), use a curve on the Blue channel to shift the color (yellow is "opposite" blue on the "color wheel").

Not sure if this works on the RAW files directly, but you may be able to analyze the image as above and use the info to enter a custom WB correction in the RAW editor first ...

Play with the manual WB sliders until it looks right.
