I have been watching and learning on dpchallenge for a while now, but have never voted because I'm just not sure if I am "qualified" TO vote.
Should I:
A) NOT vote - because I have much yet to learn; many people on here are way better photographers than I am, so in comparison I don't really "know what I'm talking about" in terms of photographic techniques or
B) Vote - because I do have eyes in my head; can interpret a challenge; have common sense, intelligence, my own ideas ; have at least some knowledge and skills, and I know what I do and don't like.
So what do you think? Should only the "experts" vote, or us common folks, too?
Everyone should vote, and comment too if you have the time - I've often found that taking the time to vote makes me look at the photos more and appreciate them more, plus they on occasion inspire me to try out new ideas - plus, if you comment, you'll tend to find that you learn more about photo composition etc...
VOTE: I have learned as much from voting as I have from taking pictures. Vote the way you see the photograph and learn from experience. What I have found that helps me more than anything is going back through a challenge after it is over, starting from first place and going all the way through I compare how I voted to the average vote received for that picture. If I’m within +/- 1 from the average then I believe I have done a good job of voting. If I see a photo where I was more than +/-1 off the average I open the thumbnail and look the photo and read the comments. I do this to help me improve on voting witch will in return improve my ability to take a picture. I hope that makes since. Start voting!

The trouble with 'experts' is that they often lack in human experience, which leads them to judge quickly without consideration of facts that lie outside of their 'field of expertise'.

Vote I say... An in depth knowledge of photography is but one aspect of the discussion at hand. As with other matters falling into the realm of art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In addition, once you have had the opportunity to peruse the comments of those "in the know" you will enhance your knowledge and develop a more critical eye.
If a professional's photos only appeal to other professional photographers, then I'd say that person needs some work. To vote, you need only an opinion -- you either like it or you don't. I say leave comments too...yours are just as valid as anyone else's -- if you think a picture is too dark, and some professional thinks the same picture is too light...no big deal, it's your own perception...and you're both entitled to those opinions.
I'll cast my vote for VOTE. If someone were selling their photos, they'd want to know the opinions of the general public, not just the experts. Experts aren't the only ones that buy photos these day. :)

It would be nice if in addition to already having an opinion, a voter also brought a little curiosity and a will to consider the photo, so he may form an opinion. If he finds a picture too dark or too light, perhaps he would also share why he thinks so.

You'll have to take that up with the general public here as that is their own 'commenting etiquette' and it is not my usual practice to make comments without also sharring why I feel a certain way.

I don't feel different but I might be able to give you a slightly different perspective.
In the poverty challenge I have a number of negative comments along with the positive (and some constructive ones), the negative comments tied in with people giving me low scores (1,2 or 3). When I look at the profiles of the commenters it appears (in general) that newbies are marking me down and the 'veterans' are being supportive. This can lead to a feeling of frustration and a gut reaction that these people should not be allowed to vote until they have got the feeling of things around here. This however is MY failing, everyone is entitled to their opinion and after the initial reaction I'm pleased that they made the effort to not only vote, but also to comment and I respect their opinion fully. There is a natural reflex action to defend ourselves when confronted, but taking critism (even if not well formed) helps us to be more open and respectful.
So there you have it, without doubt you should vote (as everyone on the site should), and if you vote anything 3 or less then please leave a tactful comment, and if IN YOUR OPINION you see something about a photo that you feel should be mentioned then leave a comment, it helps and is much appreciated by anyone who has a desire to improve.
Go ahead & vote but just to clarrify giving someone a 1 doesnt mean you want them to come first or a 2 for second or a 3 for third etc. I'm sure there must of been some confusion with voters in my last challenge.

I got a heap of those confused ones as well, if there is a shrink on the site maybe they could help.!!!!LOL
