I really, really like the tick box for "Helpful Comments". Could another box be added for "Troll Comments"? This is a learning site with no place (IMO)for being mean or rude or crude.

If you receive a comment that is inappropriate for the site, please feel free to let any site council member or administrator know. Comments that are patently offensive (read: violation of terms of use) will be dealt with accordingly.

Some people just don't have tact, I suppose. Most will try to give constructive criticism, but sometimes it comes out sounding too harsh. I still find it funny when I see comments like "duh" and "what is it". Comes with the territory. Hopefully you get more constructive comments than bad ones.
The problem with a "Troll Comment" checkbox is it will encourage trolls... Not discourage them. Trolls feed on recognition and would love it if people checked a box that basically said "this remark got to me"...

I enjoy getting troll comments.. It lets me know who I need to take seriously and who I need to ignore... If people want to be known as trolls, then we can just let them thrive on that. Everyone needs some way to get their kicks, and tastelessness and poor tact seems to be the choice of some...

Ignore a troll and they go somewhere else.
You are probably correct for the most part. I would so like this experience to be a positive one, esp. for the newbies on this site. Having NO entries for the past month or so, I don't have the opportunity to either ignore the trolls or encourage them, but I do worry about our newer people.
i am tired of troll threads all the time. If comments bother certain poeple so much they can do one of two things: submit better photos, don't submit a photo at all, or learn from the comments. I am starting to think that certain people start calling people names just because they don't like a certain photograph. I get constant low scores but I don't go around calling people names (troll). Grow up.

It's not a "name," it's a designation. The point is, there are some comments that you can't learn from, and which only exist to set fire. Whether or not you think the issue of a "troll" checkbox should be debated doesn't mean that you should question the maturity of users using a generally accepted internet forum term.
Basically, pull that beam out of your eye and say something relevant to the discussion instead of intentionally insulting people by posting an inflammatory comment.

By their very nature, troll comments aren't helpful and often aren't even connected to whether a picture is good or not, leaving your list with only the option of not submitting at all. There is a better choice though, and that is too learn to ignore comments that serve no constructive purpose, and take advantage of those that do.
Then make a checkbox for "offending comments" too. One comment on my last submission was: "Do us all a favor and stop (living) lol"
IMO a very "special" kind of critique...
Hiding comments only makes you police them more. Concentrate on the good ones, and use a positive way of ignoring them by checking the ones you deem helpful or considerate.
If we are proactive at the positive, then the troll doesn't get what they intended... attention.
As always, as clubjuggle pointed out, if there is a comment blatantly offensive/degrading that specifically is discussed as not allowed by the rules, then please inform a moderator, and it will be handled accordingly.
Boy, would that comment be considered a troll comment. You may have thought it was helpful, but I didn't. Back to my point what one person thinks is helpful another one doesn't. I seen people complain about the troll issue over comments that are "out of focus". One person thought it was helpful and another didn't. How about everyone is only allowed to put in nice comments and can only vote tens. That way, just like in preschool, everyone gets the same score and nobody's feelings are hurt.

I agree, that comment was inappropriate and totally devoid of constructive comment. It has been removed.
