..., and its about something that happened a little while ago, but i never understood how this photo won the vanishing point challenge. maybe im just not seeing the "appearance of a point on the horizon at which parallel lines converge together", or maybe its cuz its not really there, but i was quite shocked when i saw this came in first.
and i dont mean this as a disrespect towards crabappl3, i even added the photo to my favs during the challenge voting, and i find hes an excellent photographer. MAybe someone can clear it out for me. what do you all think?
i think maybe your interpretation is a more literal than most of the people that voted...whether or not there are parallel lines, it still is an awesome example of a vanishing point
I'll take a stab at explaining my interpretation of the challenge and this shot...
The sides of the road are parallel (although they are not straight, the edges of the road are always parallel to each other) and they are definitely converging (if you measure the distance between the edges of the road at the bottom of the frame, it is larger than the distance between the edges of the road at the point when they disappear on the horizen).
Edited to add - also, although this doesn't add to the "it fits the challenge" dimension, it is a phenomenal shot!
It won because DPC loves a 'WOW' shot. And, being that there haven't been many snow capped mountain shots in challenges in the past, it was a fresh interpretation of the challenge.
Plus, it's a purty pitcher and don't we all just love purty pitchers?
I think it's a loose interpretation as the path vanishes behind the hill. It's also an implied vanishing point as you can start to see the path narrow. A very nice shot indeed.

i like the way you said it elru21, the sides are parrallel to each other (but not straight), and if you put it that way, then it does fit the challenge more.
