Not a once in a lifetime opportunity, but last week I was at a family reunion in the Rocky Mountain National Park. It was late afternoon and our son and his wife came in excitedly to tell me there was a beautiful bull elk at the stream by the entrance to the condos. It was raining, but not hard. I put my camera in a plastic sleeve, threw on a poncho, and took off. He was still there. The best shots, though, were over a quite high fence that I couldn't even see over; from the other direction, you could only get condos or the road in the background. So my son got down on the ground and had me stand on his knee so I could shoot over the fence. I got some great shots. Then we went into the garbage area, also fenced in, and I tried perching on the dumpsters but I couldn't hold steady. So he found some paint cans for me to stand on. More great shots. Finally I said I was done and we could go. Walking back to our condo, I decided to take a look. You have already guessed it . . . no memory card! By the time I got back, the elk was in the back yards of nearby houses. Oh well.

Ack!! I've done that. Can you set your camera to not shoot without a card? I do that on my canon.
Wendy, facripesake set your camera to shoot RAW+JPG on your minimal preset; that way, no matter what sort of funkiness you dial in, the RAW can discard it. Problem solved!

Nope. Massively over exposing or underexposing can't be solved in raw. :)
