The top 4 were all entries I had guessed might actually be yours. And one of them was!
THese are my favorite challenges ( … in the style of …) … and i think Deb was particularly challenging in that she does have an array of subject matter.
And honestly, I was completely surprised my image did so well. But I did truly try to find a mood / feeling in her style … and well, I have a cat ;))
The cat thing helps. And pigeons. Not many pigeons, were there? And not a single doll - if someone were to just try to emulate the top scoring pictures, you'd expect a doll or a couple in the rain under an umbrella.

Yep. :-) I found it interesting the photos that emulated your most recent entries, and not much digging into your portfolio shots - that's all.
Ah. There were quite a few that even I had to dig through my portfolio to find what I thought would have been the reference image! The skateboard park shot was one of fortuitous timing. The photographer happened to be out here for another reason and we went to Venice Beach for a get-together. That park is just wonderful to shoot in the evening light. Tons of skaters, tons of onlookers, great light.
But this one reminds me of this one from my stay in Germany (in 2008):
The buttons seemed to be an interpretation of a shot in my portfolio that never made a challenge:

Thank you for mentioning the buttons. I actually did check out your portfolio and was quite impressed with all the different subjects in your shots. My cat is never around when I need him, I live in the country so there are no beaches, streets and few people to see but I have a button box that holds buttons from 3 generations, so when I saw your buttons I thought that would work but wasn't Melethia enough. ;)

Actually I had a great time browsing through your portfolio and a hard time to decide which way to go
It was my understanding that this challenge was to create something "in the style" of Deb, not to copy her work.
My all-time favorite image on DPC is this one ....... It has humor, and a whole lot more.
Now my attempt in this vein ended up next-to-last, well except for that lovely Posthumous Fantasy Gallery Award.
By now, I think we all know Melethia's work, and probably most of us romped thru her portfolio again for the fun of it.
I think most people in the Challenge nailed one facet or another of her work.
PS - I just realized: her image, above, didn't do so good either. :)
You'd think by now we'd all know what is expected in an "in the style of" challenge - or at least understand that we all have varying interpretations of it. Then again, I forget that it's always like Groundhog Day around here. :)
It did not, Alice, and I was just fine with that. A lot of my work is simply far too busy. But I like it that way. I'm weird. :-)
You see, Deb, it's not that that image is weird (yes, it is) or busy, but that it is unique. It has humor and a whole lot more that I'm not qualified to describe. To prove that, it has some 1248 views (and counting) since it was entered. Not a whole lot of images have that exposure. Especially those (Ahem) scoring in the 4s.

I live most days in the crowds of the city and was thrilled to be on the beach and enjoying the pacific coast light. If there is anyone who feels I took advantage of the situation, I'm truly sorry. I do enjoy Deb's work sincerely,

Penny is the last person to copy someone's work. She has a style and a view that's very unique, and certainly can see and appreciate Deb's wonderful style.
If someone's style gets you to shoot and appreciate something you haven't shot before, how is that wrong? If there was a "in the style of vawendy", and someone ends up taking a bird shot that's extremely similar to one of mine, I'd appreciate that they took the time and effort to understand and shoot something that I put a huge amount of time into.
Why must we always question people's motives? Especially when it's someone that we know so well, who doesn't go out an copy things.
Leave it alone, people! Enjoy the challenge! I'm really sorry that I missed that one. What fun it would have been!

I was riffing off the OP's comments regarding copying.
I had absolutely no intention of identifying anyone's photography
to suggest anyone copied an image.
And trying not to put my foot any further into my mouth, I certainly
did not mean (for example) PennyStreet's image
when I know perfectly well she does things in her own excellent way and no other way.
Yes, Wendy, why didn't you enter the challenge, hmmm?? :-) I've been known to shoot a seagull now and then.....
I haven't been around much. Been losing my chi. I desperately wanted to find a pigeon for you. Was dreaming of pigeon shadows. Hadn't thought of cats. Though one that I've always wanted to *copy* (hehehe) was this: (although, I really do mean copy. I think it's perfectly lovely and I'd love to be able to figure it out.)
