Was just curious what some of you folks use as backgrounds for your photographs? Whats a good material to use to minimize or maximize reflected light? What do you use to difuse light? What kind of lights do you use? Are there alternatives to professional (expensive! :))equipment? I'm trying to set up an area in the basement as a studio and any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Check out this site.... it should answer all your questi9ons..... or at least give you an idea of what you should do and where you should start.
Mark: there are several threads, some quite recent, where people have shared their home setups. My memory is bad on details but have a look in Q&A or Hardware, perhaps.
I found a framed needlepoint picture at the thrift store. The cloth was stapled to an inner frame that fit right into the outer frame (no glass involved). I switched out the old picture with some white $1 per yard fabric from walmart and use it in front of my Home Depot utility clamp light. I have also used an old metal clothing rack (the kind on wheels) to hang background fabric on. Almost all of the fabric at Walmart will eventually end up at $1 a yard. Just find something that won't wrinkle too badly, is heavy enough to lay flat, and isn't too reflective.
