The biggest problem with inexpensive scopes is usually with the mount/tripod: hard to lock into position, can't track, and tend to jiggle with little provocation.
I think you get a better bang for the buck with a table-top reflector model (Celestron is a common brand), though what I really want to recommend is a kit to build your own reflector telescope -- if Isaac Newton could do it in the 1600s she can too!
