This is actually no "artifact"!
I was going back home and noticed something "weird" in the sky, so I pulled the car over and got out to take a look.
Luckily for me I have been off to shoot a promotional video, so I had my full gear with me, including tripods.
I couldn't help by feeling a profund sense of admiration for what I was witnessing, that was a phenomenon I've never seen before in my entire life.
I shot a couple of pictures (one of which entered the challenge) and a TimeLapse, which is not that "great", but it shows the halo deeply planted around the moon! :)
(I went for a different post processing for the Time-Lapse. The red sky in the picture I've entered is primarily due to the light pollution of the city below, which I enhanced in post production).
So, about the phenomenon...
As I got home I started looking up in the internet and find this...
So this is nothing but an optical phenomenon (quite rare on the Moon, more common on the Sun) "that belongs to the family of ice crystal halos" and it's also called "Moon Ring" or "Winter Halo".
Pretty cool, uh? :)
The only regret I have is not having gone to a place where I could have shot it in a landscape context, but I was really exhausted from work and, after standing there for the 2 hours it took for the TimeLapse sequence to complete I got straight home.
p.s. this happened exactly the day before the "Super Moon".
I'm a bit disappointed of how it scored in the challenge, but I don't care. Happy to have raised somebody's curiosity :)
Great info, thanks for sharing. As for the voting, personally I found the colors very weird. It didn't fit so well with a moon. Btw. your score wasn't that bad ;)
I was walking with my dog while this weird moon was in the sky. I had seen this once before and still was impressive. This time I have been sooo lazy, so no pictures. As for the red color... mmm... you know what I think about it ;)

I can agree with you about the colors, Henk.
Maybe I should have gone for the blue version, as the wise alexkc suggested me (AFTER I already entered it :P).
Anyway I preferred to enhance the red, rather than shifting it to the blue, it was kind of an experiment and it didn't go as I expected, that's it :)
