I think it's a combination of high-iso and underexposure noises. I can denoise it successfully in NIK, more or less, but at a huge sacrifice in acuity. I'd be more inclined, if it were mine, to crop and then ADD noise for an atmospheric effect :-)
I like kidding about Canon, but believe me, I couldn't shoot with the system now. If you underexpose it's a nightmare. I'm much more impressed with the lack of details than with the noise. Great lenses, great bodies but sensors are not as good as other cameras bodies.

Thank you Robert. I wasn't aware of "underexposure noises". So when you denoise it - you lose a lot of detail - is that what you mean?

Yes, and it still is. We have a spare twin room, so you even can come together and share that room.
@Kees - Skye is top of my list of destinations to visit in Scotland. That is a mighty fine and kind offer - there is nothing I would love more than spend some time with a local taking photos of this most stunningly beautiful part of the world.
Looks like there is miss-focused as well. The leaves in the branches on top are clearer. If it's the end of the focus length that is a trade of this lens. The 5.6 there is not great at all... at an F8 you might have had better results.
I tried to work on it a bit in LR and a bit of PS. The noise does not bother me as he lack of details.
Here is my try... did not reduce the noise but rather make it look sharpener. I did not touch in any way the colors or the WB. Better seen at full size (its 1600px)

Thank you Tiberius. I am starting to think there is an issue with this lens. The camera has just had a service at the Canon Repair Center so I am ruling the camera out. I was on my lunchtime walk today and in my village found 7 deer - not something I see every day in my village. Anyway I thought I was in for a treat and hoping for some great photos. I took over 800 photos and not one of them I am pleased with:(
I got quite close to them but all the shots are lacking in detail.
Here is an example shot which was taken at ISO 200 on a Monopod. Note I have a B+W UV-Haze Filter on this lens (for protection only) - I have just read there may be issues using filters with this lens but not sure whether this is just rumour.

I use a single point Auto Focus - so hopefully I have not missed the focus on over 800 shots.
Perhaps it was just not great light or my settings were not optimal but I was hoping to get better results.
Could the lens need calibration?
However I was happy with this shot taken with the same lens about a month ago

Perhaps as you say this lens is not great at the end of its focus length. I would like to get to the bottom of it as feel I missed a great opportunity today.
Unfortunately I have removed the photos from this thread . Cory also mentioned "If you are going to shoot wide open, expect softish images. They'll usually sharpen well. I still like to stay faster that 1/x for shutter speed, even with the IS."
It's a great lens and it takes a while to get used with it. I am happy to have it

What Bear said... and mostly the underexposure. Your Canon 6D is more than capable of producing a clean image at ISO1600, but if you have to drag the image out of the low end of an underexposed original it's going to bring lots of noise with it. That said, your skittish visitor probably wasn't going to sit still for a long exposure and sometimes it's better to live with a noisy image you captured than a blurry one you missed. This was all I could manage with your original:
Thank you Shannon. I hope it is just a case of underexposure. I can understand the fox photos but 800 deer photos on a Monopod with good light (I thought) and ISO values less than 500.
I realised my cheeky monkey photo was taken on the Canon 100-400 Mark II that I had hired prior to buying the used Mark I.
Anyway I will do some test shots on a tripod to try and figure out if there are any issues.
