I am a big fan of "selective color" and "replace color" in PS. I have refraned from using them for images I plan on using on this site. They are not spot edits. No masks are created but they do only affect a certain "range of color" (IE - yellows, red's, blues, etc...). I imagine it is OK because they are global changes but just want a ruling on it.

people have done it before and it is allowed, though doesn't tend to score very well.

Hey gordon thanks. Really though these moves are pretty transparent to the viewer. They are just subtle ways of tweeking individual color groups. I never use them for radical moves. I basically like using it to clean up a color. Make a sky a little brighter by removing some red or black out of a dark blue. It is really helpful. And if you have missed a white balance setting these tools can be real useful also...
