I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon...

I routinely check my scores both at home and at work. For the first time, today, I noticed that my image is darker on my computer at work than it is at my home. I have fully calibrated my home monitor, and I am confident that it properly reflects tones, hues and the like accurately. Obviously, my computer at work is not calibrated making my image look much darker....

Issue one: Have folks that participate and vote here calibrated their monitors? If not, could that explain some comments such as "too bright" or "contrast levels are off"

Issue two: Are images being scored lower based on perceptions of images through a montior that is not properly calibrated?

I obviously will calibrate my monitor at work when I vote from there.

Finally, does anyone know of a utility or other such mechanism to check the calibration levels of monitors?

I was just about to write something similar, but you were faster.

I have noticed that my computer at work is not calibrated properly and when I looked at my Waldo entry this morning from work I cannot see the person in my photo because it is too dark!

My computer at home is calibrated properly and I can see my person quite well. I too hope that I will not get marked down because of un-calibrated monitors.

Older Video cards are usually DRIVING monitors darker, some only have 16 bit or 24 bit color outputs.
My monitor show photos exatcly the way they are printed.Have N-vidia Geforce AGP 64 MB and drives the monitor with 32 bits true color.If I vote from work everyone will get 2 because of my old PC.

I posted a question several days ago about brightness levels of the pictures on DPC. I asked why my submissions showed up brighter on the DPC pages (or MS Explorer) than when displayed in my (gamma calibrated) iPhotoPlus editing software. I was given tips about always checking my picture through my browser before submitting, but no one seemed to know the reason why Explorer behaved that way.

As far as tools go for the calibration levels, I remember getting a colored sticky with my video card - you stick it to your screen and play with the color levels to make the coloured boxes the same as the test colours behind it. I never used it, I just adjust my monitors in a way that won't make my eyes shrivel if I have to spend the whole day working on them...that's my calibration criterion.
