I'm not trying to discourage you, but I received more comments when I first joined back before the Members thing started. I also receive more comments when I take a decent photo. If you have the time I personally think it is worth the investment. You have the chance to participate in two challenges every week and this week there will be a third. That was the reason why I decided to go Member, because I have a chance to take more pictures during the week on different subjects. Comments are nice but you're bound to get the same amount whether you're a member or not, it really depends on the photo.
Just want to add that I have 60 votes and 3 comments now which is lower than usual, but than again its not my best photo.
