I am thinking of upgrading from my Canon 70D to a Canon 6D.
I had previously been considering upgrading to the Canon 5D Mark ii but from what I read the 6D is better overall.
So before I proceed just wanted to see what you guys thought of this upgrade?
I appreciate I will lose the articulated screen and flash and the shoot speed will be slower but I believe there will be big advantages in image quality.
I am not fussed about getting a lighter body so am not considering the mirrorless cameras at the moment.
I am aware several of my lenses will no longer work with the 6D.
So any advice appreciated and of course if anyone in the UK has one to sell then let me know:)
If you can afford it keep the 70D for your EF-S lenses. My current setup for Iceland where I am going in October is:
6D with 24-105
70D with EF-S 10-22 plus 70-200 f4
That covers full range of what I would like to shoot with big and heavy cameras. I have also Sony RX10 II and RX100 IV if I want to walk around lightweight.

As you have both of the cameras can you confirm if the image quality is a significant amount better than the 70D? What would you say are the 6D strong point me for you compared to the 70D?
Even if I'm a Nikon/Sony user I can say that in some photography areas Full Frame cameras, like the 6D you mentioned, are MUCH better than APS-C ones :)
I'm biased. I'm a FF guy, no apologies. Nothing like more sensor area for control of DoF and gathering more photons. Tiberius points up a couple of the disadvantages of the 6D. The AF system is pretty basic, but very reliable. The 1/4000 shutter speed limit can constrain with fast glass in bright sunlight. I've bumped into this limitation on several occasions, and it is a pain to carry and ND filter for that. Frankly I do love the 6D body, and even if/when I jump back into the 5D series, I will keep the 6D.

I love my 6D. It's also very light and quite small. Wi-Fi is handy for street, night shooting etc.
The 11 points auto focus with only one cross type is a weak point.
Only couple of times i did need faster shutter speed than 1/4000 but no big deal.

Same argument and I love my 6D too and to me I have been to 4000 some handful of time but not a lot so 8000 is off the book. About cross type it is a weak point and I wish it had what 5D Miii has but why would they give you for the price so low compare to 5d miii :)
I suspect I have a bit of GAS - but I have had this body since 2014 so feels like time for a change. However it may be more sensible to purchase a longer lens - though the desire to be full frame is nagging at me even if I don't really have any reason for wanting it:)
What about 5D MKII? I have a body sitting doing nothing as I prefer 70D with 10-22 than 5D MKII with 17-40 (I don't want to spend money on 16-35). The main reason is the weight as I cannot tell that much difference in quality. If you would be interested and would like to hang on till November I will be in the UK for a few weeks then and you could borrow 5D MKII and see if you like it. I can work out a good price with a special DPC discount if you decided to get it ;)

I had originally thought the 5D Mark ii was the full frame I wanted to upgrade to as I previously had a 5D Mark i for a few weeks and really liked it but didn't get on with the lack of auto ISO. I will keep you posted if I can be patient enough to wait until November. That is very kind of you to offer to let me borrow it to try it but I would not need to borrow it as I am sure the specs on paper would be enough to help me make my decision and the price and condition too obviously:)
I find it quite confusing deciding which Canon full frame to go for. I am sure the 6D and 5D Mark ii are both excellent - I just need to be sure I am going to get much more than I already have with the 70D.
Frankly I'd get the 6D over the 5D MKII... the sensor performance is significantly better.
I agree with Kirbic. If I were buying Canon FF right now I'd be looking at 6D, not 5D mk-whatever.... The image quality is fantastic, and it's a LOT lighter and more manageable. As for the cropped-vs-FF question, there's no question the image quality is a dramatic improvement; so much so that you can CROP the 6D image to APS-C dimensions and still be looking better than what you have now. So that takes care of your telephoto worries :-)

I am now sitting on Ebay waiting for a good 6D deal to appear. Just missed a corker last night that included a 24-105 lens for a super price. It was snapped up within minutes of being listed - I spent too much time deliberating and missed it:(
i have a 5d2 and i rent a 6D often when i shoot weddings. i like both but its really hard to compare the two. The 6D is better at focus and high ISO noise but changing focus points drives me nuts, the 6D auto ISO with restricting the minimum shutter is just a great option (especially with long lenses), I really wish my 5d2 had that feature.
I really like what the 6D has to offer but using the 5d2 is just more of an overall pleasant experience. It fells nicer in the hands, its balances lenses better, the button layout is better and it feels more robust, overall it behaves like a professional camera. the 6D feels like a budget camera with an amazing sensor.
maybe im just more comfortable with my 5d2.
you cant really go wrong with either but i'd likely recommend the 6d since it has a newer sensor and features. if youve never used a 5d series and the 1/4000 isn't a deal breaker, the 6d is probably the way to go since you wont have the baseline to contrast it against.

And that pretty much sums it up, but the basic feature set of the 6D still makes the grade for those whose shooting style does not demand a really high performance AF system (though the performance of the AF system on the 6D is very, very good despite its basic nature). When you look at the value equation, the 6D really hits the mark. Heck, you can currently buy a Canon Refurbished body for $1149, with a full 1-year warranty!
Funny enough, I'd be seriously looking at a used 1D X if I wanted a newer full frame camera.
The 1 series is just so damned nice in so many ways, I don't think I can give that up.
Well that would be way beyond my budget but it would be nice.
Hell, it's even a bit much for me at the young (not as young as I'd bloody well like) age of 35..
I do like the Sony RX1 (which I have for EXACTLY this reason) but there's something about the overall rendering of the 1D sensors that is just.. Better. Guess the best way I can explain it is a 'natural randomness' to the noise that makes it really lovable. Something like what the MM Leica was delivering in terms of noise you actually like, and want to embrace.
Perhaps they've gotten their 5mk? line up to that standard by now, but I doubt it, and sorta doubt they'll ever let anything come close to the 1D sensor in terms of noise handling and noise quality. On the up side, they HAVE now decided that the 1D line should be full frame.
So other than pure stupid cost, and weight, they're something a Canon shooter really needs to consider when looking at the newer system, especially given that a used 1Dx can be had, if not reasonably, at least something bordering on a sane price.

Shit the 6D has that? I LOVE the limiters on the 1DmkIV, is it just shutter, or can you limit the ISO and Aperture as well? Also, can you set max values too, or is it just minimum limit?

Actually, if you look at results from the 6D sensor, you'll find it is *just* like that. Awesome sensor.
