He retired 2 years ago aged 55, said 232mph was getting a little scary. Set record time that year 6.1 secs.
Great photos spydr! Shots 3, 4, and 5 are my favs. If you get a chance, try shooting a night race. I think the flames from the nitro cars would make for some good shots.
We used to go to the drags all the time when I lived in California. Mostly at the old Irwindale Raceway (before they turned it into a brewery), and the Winter Nationals at Pomona Fairgrounds, but a couple times at Lyons and OCIR too. Now I live in Oregon, and the only things these rednecks race is horses, cheap stockcars, and their mouths. :) There’s a track close by in Woodburn, but no nitro, just alcohol. I think the nearest top-fuel racing is up in Seattle. After seeing your photos, I think I’ll have to make a trip up there one of these days.

Yah, he’s a character. I once installed a windshield in his car. Don Steve’s Chevrolet in Whittier California was one of his sponsors at the time, and he drove one of their ElCaminos. After I put the new windshield in I got a tour of their carrier truck. The setup they had in that truck was awesome! Funny cars are very cool toys!
