more than gratuitous, the kicking. there was a time when men (yes, men) thought nature was pure mechanism, that is, that creatures other than man had no feelings, and they did bad (gratuitous) things to celebrate this feat (!) of reason. so for someone or anyone like me who attempts to plumb history for clues to our inhumanity, those kicks evoke a certain horror.
not that I am a Findhornian, but I do believe in at least respecting the possibility that some kind of force resides in a machine ... I remember talking to my bicycle when I had trouble re-attaching a loose chain in the middle of nowhere.
