I've searched and can't seem to find what I need. I'm coming to you for help -
I recently got a new computer, loaded my PsCC. It still has the original "Preferences". I need to change my Save File choice from Tiff to PSD. I know I can do it but I can't find Preferences in the CC version. I can find all kinds of links for older versions but not PsCC!!!
And I have a feeling it's going to be a very simple obvious fix...
Yup, that's where the preferences menu lives, BUT there doesn't seem to be anything on it that relates to Ja-9's issue.
Janine, what do you use for a RAW processor? When I use DxO Optics Pro, which I mostly do, it exports to CC as a Tiff file and I have to save-as PSD the first time in CC, then it "sticks".
Yes I believe this may be the solution. Same goes for many Photoshop settings - it will pick up what was done previously.

I use Lr as my RAW processing> PsCC> do all my edits then "Save As". That's where I know I can change my preference to come up as PSD vs coming up as Tiff.
It should be in the Edit File but it's not there anymore on PsCC.
It's a simple preference choice...grrrrr
I'm just tired of always stopping to change it from Tiff to PSD. On my old computer using PsCC I used to always come up as PSD...I'm not sure if I changed the Preference for it (probably not) but in all the updates to PsCC I don't have the Preference choice anymore...(or at least they hid it well from me....hmmmmm could be a reason???)

Robert, my files transfer from Lr to PsCC as NEF files. I have changed the settings in Lr so I'll see if that helps.
but I can not find the "Preference" choice under "Edit". Either I'm blind (a good possibility) or it's just NOT there. So that article doesn't help (at least if I can't bloody well find the bugger).
I work in the Printing genre of the graphics world. Adobe started promoting use of the native Illustrator and PSD files a few years ago - must have been around when the released the Creative Suite (AI files and PSDs can be placed into Indesign). Strangely, LR defaults to TIF which I have used since just because I didn't really think about it. If you apply compression to the TIFs, the size might be closer to PSD - but other than compatiblity with other (non-adobe) software, I can't see why TIF would be preferred. However, it is lossless, unlike JPG.

BTW: the article I posted did not mention EPS or PDF. Photoshop can create either, and will also include vector data in EPSs (a somewhat outdated format) if you so desire (for those that like to set type and draw in Photoshop). But regardless, I think TIF and PSD would be your most viable options for maintaining layers (text, filters etc). Personally I may switch to PSD after reading your post and it activating some synapses - especially if it turns out to generate much smaller files.
It's in LR Preferences->External Editing. Top dialog has a File Format drop down for PS CC 2014 where you can choose between TIFF and PSD, along with setting color space, bit depth and resolution.
When the file opens in PS it will show as a NEF file, but as soon as you Save it the format will change to PSD, as will the file name on the tab. This prevents the PSD file from actually being created until you want it (i.e. if you simply quit without saving there's no clean-up).
I've found little to no difference in file sizes between TIFF and PSD. My suspicion is that TIFF is more universally recognized as a file format should you want to send it to another program. I can't think of another reason to use it (I use PSD).

That's correct -- almost all other programs recognize the TIFF format. From Photoshop you can save it with the LZW compression setting if you need to save space -- it is lossless. The PSD format uses proprietary compression so it will not always be the same size (on disk) as other formats with the same dimensions.
Newer versions of Photoshop can preserve Layers in the TIFF format, but I use TIFF only for final (flattened) composites; any time I want to preserve Layers I save as a PSD file.
Thank you one and all...I think I've figured it out...it's the Lr that was causing the problem...
But I'd still like to know what happened to Preferences in PsCC??? Did they just plain eliminate it??? Mine updates with changes all the time so I hadn't noticed until now that it just wasn't there anymore....hmmmmm

in win 7 (not sure about 8) but psd over 1gb would crash my system (i think its a known bug)
if you use tiff PSD you may be stuck with PS, if you use tif you can usually open them in any image editor. this is especially important if you ever decide to allow your CC subscription to expire.
That is sooooo interesting Robert - yours is different from mine!!! And we both have PsCC!!! When I get hm I'll take a screen shot...then I'm going to see exactly what version I have (should be identical to yours) and check for any updates.
Mike, unless Ps goes belly up...I have no intention of not having some version of that...EVER!!! I love my PsCC!!! If I HAVE to I'll go back to Elements ....JUST SHOOT ME NOW!!!
