Discovered a weird problem on my computer this week and I'm just wondering if I'm the only one. Had about 40 photos (some originals, some edited and some made with my phone) which had a size of zero bytes (running Windows 8.1, photos were on an internal SATA disk, there are almost 25.000 photos on that disk). Still don't have a clue what caused it. Except for 2 old edited photos, I could restore all of them from my "backblaze" backup, but it's not nice to see my photos disappear. Any ideas?

I have faced that on my NAS drive but i deleted those photos which moved them to the deleted folder and then later i recovered them from there - just copied them back to original location. Some of those turned out to be zero bytes and were lost - though the file exist. My guess is NAS drive marked those as deleted and new data was written over the sectors where those images were stored. Hence the file record stayed in the directory structure (deleted folder) but actual data was lost. Have not seen this happening to images that I have not deleted. SO maybe you deleted those images and recovered them using some tool/manner?

I've seen that happen as well. It could be that the files (or the references to their data locations) got corrupted. Could be "bit rot" at work. When data is stored on a magnetic disk and is not read and re-written for a long period, occasionally enough bits can become unreadable to render the data non-recoverable despite error correction.
