"Pulp Fiction" surprised the hell out of me, actually. Ditto Don's choice of "From Dusk to Dawn", another Tarantino work. More recently, I was totally surprised (in a completely different way) by an extraordinary Japanese film, Departures. Found it on Netflix Streaming, had never heard of it, even though it had won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2009. Stunning movie.
