Howdy, I'd like some additional feedback/criticism on last month's Freestudy, please.

my main problem with the image is that the mist makes the image look out of focus and less contrasty on the left side compared to the sharp focus and high contrast of the right.. its not a very pleasing feeling unfortunately the balance feels off and the two sides compete for attention.

Michelle, though I wasn't able to vote on the challenge (traveling). I like the soft feel of the photo but the colors IMO are a bit to faded. There are two tutorials that I would highly recommend.

One is by Mark Johnson, Workbench 374. It shows how to add contrast and totally control the application...

The other one is by Anthony Morganti, his tutorials on using Lr are amazing!!! I really need to get back to watching more. I've learned quite a bit from watching his stuff. Especially watch Parts 1-4...it will be time well spent!!!

And for what it is worth...waterfalls just don't ever do well here on DPC...I don't know why but I've never had one do nearly as well as what I thought it should (could be "my photos"....lol)

What did it look like out of camera? The processing is pleasant, but the composition needs something more to anchor and/or balance it. If the falls alone were what you wanted to show off, a different angle and a portrait orientation might have served you better. Just some thoughts...

For me, it's that I'm not sure what the image is trying to show me. If it's the building, it's too far, and the angle is too sharp. If it's the falls, the crop is too tight to convey a true sense of size and power. I don't know if the soft focus is the right approach to the image, but I don't necessarily object to it. Bottom line, is I think it's the composition which is the problem.
