While viewing an image on the back of the camera, an idiot I know intended to erase the single image and accidentally erased all the images on the card. I don't think there was anything amazing lost, but there were a few I might have liked to take a closer look at. I was hoping there was some free/cheap utility I could download that could magically restore them. If I have to invest much time and/or money to recover them it may not be worth doing. Thanks.
Note that disk manufacturers, like Sandisk, have recovery software for free. Good luck! (I have some somewhere, but I can't find it right now. Worked just fine, though.)
Hopefully there is nothing on there that is challenge worthy. I've used the Sandisk Recovery tool before, and it renamed all of the images as it recovered them.

I just followed the link. It was perfect -- both free and no-hassle. All files recovered. On behalf of the idiot that deleted them (me), thanks, Deb.
Now I will probably got through them and decide they were all fit for the garbage bin. ;)

Does renaming make them invalid for a challenge original?
Mark, I sent a PM before some of these replies were posted, but honestly if you can get a utility for free from the memory card maker that would be a better option.
I used Recuva -- it was mentioned in the article link in Melethia's message. It appears to have maintained the original file names. Regardless, on a quick pass I did not notice any that would likely finish high enough for any challenge that it will be an issue.
We have validated challenge entries on the basis of recovered originals in the past, so I know it's doable. What I don't know is whether this is the case with ALL recovered files. For anyone wanting to enter an image from a recovered original, the smart thing to do would be to send us the original to preview for EXIF integrity.
