How about a private message feature, where we could chat while online or leave a message or comment for someone that could be deleted. Maybe that would give a chance for the photographer to give some reason behind a subject.

I have often thought about the same thing. It would be a good feature I'd like to see here as well.

The only problem is we don't store the messages. They go out in email and we're done with them.

That and popups aren't reliable.

If it's just for a short "IM" how about storing them? The fields could just be Date, UserIDFrom, UserIDTo, Message. Then a count(*) could be done and displayed the LHS of the main page, just above your current submissions. Clicking on that could take you to a page with just a SELECT .. WHERE UserIDTo=.
I guess you'd also want some mechanism for deletion and keeping IMs stored to a minimum.

Potential problem is few people would delete them. Talk to any company's IT people and you'll see that people are packrats when it comes to storing messages. Without limits, many people would never delete them and with limits people would always be complaining about either old deleted messages or be trying to get you to increase their message storage. Seems the best course of action is the one chosen.

I am not sure how many people have used yahoo messenger in here, but the same would work here. When you sign on to yahoo a box pops up and gives you your messages, but as soon as you close that box, it deletes all of them, read or not. this could be a medium between both sides.

Doesn’t have to store popups or messages. A small window can popup and say "you have just received an IM via email". So when you’re on the site you get a popup, and then check your email.
