I have a limited experience at DPC, but this happens almost everytime with me. I start with a high score, the first 5-10 votes are the happy votes and then the score keeps dropping.. sometimes slowly, sometimes way too fast. Reading the 'how you doing' threads makes me feel I am not alone !!
Just wondering is there any reason ? any scientific explanation ??

average distribution of a random spread of numbers between 1 and 10 will be 'pulled' toward a 5.5 average. The vast majority (close to 80% if I remember my stat class) will be in the 5's or very close. This is why the 5's are considered to be a barren wasteland -- those in it are both good enough to not be noticed and not good enough to get noticed. Very few comments in this area.

Of course the votes are not completely random, so the actual average for any specific challenge will vary from upper 4's to low 6's. But the majority will still be 'pulled' to somewhere near that number.

But what happens mostly is that the first 5 are always better than your final score. I have only seen one challenge where my first 5 votes were lower than my final score.
Just wondering if the first few voters are the very enthusiastic/happy kind ?

It's possible that the first few people who vote on your picture are the ones who think, Oh that's a nice thumbnail, let me check it out. In which case the first few votes are going to be higher than the later ones.. and that would explain the sinking scores.
I've been there too, and thought about it :)
