look at the last place entrant, he also wasn't B&W ...but i guess some will say he took the brown ribbon, so he still ribboned, but i digress.
It's been a long time since someone complained that a toned monochromatic image wasn't B&W. I'm surprised there are still people who think that way.
Using toning across the entire image still qualifies as B&W, IMO (i.e. sepia toning). Even some Duo-tones would pass as long as it applies to the entire image and not spot areas. Using different toning colors within the same image does not qualify as B&W. I think that is the issue here.
As always, it's up to the voters. Usually they are not all that forgiving. Kudos to the ribbon winner!
i can see where it might be perceived as not monochromatic but when you look closely, it clearly is..
Well, it's more like selective de-toning. A straight desaturation would be B&W, and a toned image would be B&W, but combine those and it makes some people's DNMC finger itch.
Only here can people vote one non-monochrome entry to a ribbon, and slam another into oblivion.
I don't care what you want to call it, it's a purposeful perversion of the spirit of the challenge, and the only thing that fries my gnads more than someone doing that are people refusing to recognize that in one photo while slamming another. And the only thing that fries them more than that is that the judges refuse to take a stand on what is and is not B&W and continue to just let this stuff happen - "let the voters decide".
This is no different than "selective color", and neither are "black and white". I agree wholeheartedly that toned images shouldn't be an issue, and heck I can live with a faded tone that changes through the image (ala aging). We all know that's not what this is about. Once again this place is infuriating when it comes to what rules are and are not applied (God forbid we import images as DNG's as a matter of workflow - GASP!! That might make for cheating!!)
Yes, it's a gorgeous image. That doesn't mean it should have been entered.
I normally don't comment on editing issues, but to me, this is definitely a "color" image. A very beautiful image to be sure, and a very clever use of contrasting "tones", but the fact that there are two different tones underscores that there is color involved.
As Jake stated, it being a single sepia (or whatever) tone is one thing, and acceptable as "monochrome", since it is the "one" tone. However, half the impact of this particular image lies in the contrasting tone of the marble. Call it "tone" or "color", it is still two different ones, and not "mono".

When you take a picture in color, you get all kinds of color seeping in -- yellows in the warmth of the lighting, blues in the shadows. If you take a picture of something that is black and white, yet you get other colors -- is it still a picture of black and white? technically, it's a picture of black and white -- but it's not a black and white picture. :)
But it doesn't matter much to me. You do what you do and it's up to the voters to decide. Sometimes I call them idiots, sometimes I call them geniuses. It all depends upon where I land. :)

Yes. This time I'd call the image genius and the voters just plain wrong.
No reason for anger though... Some saw it wasn't B&W (or monotone) and ignored it because it was a lovely image. Some didn't notice because they vote too fast, or their monitor calibration is off. Some still don't see what the fuss is about.
Anyone who scored lower with a true black + white image should simply be embarrassed ;] Yes that includes me.
Now everyone go find some feathers for the next free study …
