Exactly right. That is what it is for. I also have used the PhotoStitch that came wiht my G2. You may want to check out Panorama Factory though. It is much better than the PhotoStitch. If you want me to let me know and I can send it to you. It is about 6 or 7MB for the whole program.
Here is why I want a pano-head. If you have noticed the tripod mount for the G2 is not center of the camera lense which means that the camera does not actually pivot at the center of the lense when on a tripod. That is why you get the ghosting some times when trying to match the stitches up. A pano-head sits on the tripod and then you can adjust the camera appropriately so that it will pivot at the cameras center point.
You are right though, the Canon G2 and PhotoStitch software do a really nice job. You will see a difference though if you check out PanoramaFactory.
