My computer is acting up terribly. Sluggish, can't photoshop anything cause it's too slow (that's why there's nothing new in my 'folio). Takes FOREVER for even simple programs like IrfanView to open. I'm getting a new hard drive today (mine is too small anyways) and rebuilding the windows system. If you don't see me here it means I forgot a cd-rom or something! Gawd I hate reformating and reinstalling everything...
Before you format, are you sure there aren't multiple copies of a virus grinning at you?
I did have an infection (can't remember what virus) and followed symantecs instructions for removing it. That was the begining of the problem. I need a new hard drive anyways and feel that this is as good a time as any to rebuild...
I do format my system once in a while too. Not that I like to. But sometimes I feel the same way - that I need to.
So do a good back-up, make sure files aren't corrupt and go for it.

Mac or PC? Mac (OS 10.3) has a new transfer feature which allows the transferral of data - including network settings and apps - to a new Mac or hard drive. It's delicious. : )

I'm swapping back and forth between the old drive and the new one till I get everything working. Anyone know of a safe way to transfer the data files without hooking the two drives together? How can I format the old drive safely without risking infecting the new system?

A CD or DVD burner is a must! That way you can also keep a backup of your data.
In order to not pass on the virus, you must not run any software from the old drive while the new drive is "on". Start with a fresh install from the Windows CD. Install all your applications from their original CDs or the webs. Don't use backups of them unless you know they are not infected.
After you install Windows, the first app to install is your Antivirus, followed by running your spyware checking software and let it immunize you.
Make sure you then let windows do it's patching thing to get you back up to speed on the security patches. Might be a good time to install SP2.
Might be a good time to look into running Mozilla Firefox (browser) and Thunderbird (for mail) if you aren't already using them. They are downloadable for free.

Ditto on that! If you must stick with Windows *sigh* :-( then at least ditch Internet Exploiter and Outlook (or, heaven forbid, outlook EXPRESS! which is a swiss-cheese block of security holes that has caused businesses and individuals to lose enormous sums of money in lost productivity and lost data due to worms and viruses).
Even my 50-something non-techie mom and dad, and my sister are now using, and lovingFirefox.
I'm going to be getting a new hard disk and reinstalling when I do, but that will be the end of Windows for me (finally) :)
I've been testing Xandros for number of months now and am convinced that it's the best linux distro for people that think in a 'windows' kinda way, over the testing period I've proven that it can cover everything I currently use, and in most cases dose it better :)
