Your regional culture does not necessarily define your politics, but the trends are definitely there, and to say something is American or un-American is meaningless.
Here is an example of how these regions create strongly divided political opinion.
The Supreme Court decision saying that Hobby Lobby has the right to not provide Birth Control coverage to employee health care:
Deep South/Tidewater: YES... "liberty" means the right of true Americans to set good Christian standards for their underlings.
Greater Applachia: YES... Christianity is the true religion and its values should be upheld. Plus, we hate government controlling anything.
Far West: YES... corporations should be free to do whatever they want
Midlands: NO... "freedom of religion" means freedom of every individual to practice any religion.
New Netherlands: NO... "freedom" is for individuals.
Yankeedom: NO... Government should take care of health care decisions, not corporations.
The Left Coast: NO... some mix of the above
I'm not sure about El Norte. Maybe yes, because of their Catholicism. New France is probably no because they like big government, too. First Nation is up in Canada hunting seals.
I will definitely have to acquire this book and read it attentively. Looking at the map one gets the impression that the author might be suggesting that the mindsets and mores of the people in Canada rest almost exclusively with those of the First Nations... something that is most certainly not correct.
The mindset of those in the far west in Canada and those in the USA are also different due to type of settlers in each area.
Like I said... I will definitely acquire the book and pay close attention to what information is contained therein.... it might be quite revealing and interesting.
Well the author got a few things right that are often missed in these sorts of maps. Splitting California, Texas and New Jersey up could only be for the better. Being a native Left Coaster (with strong ties to Yankeedom) I am always amused by my state, home of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, being assigned to the lefty liberal camp.
I'm a Left-Coaster, but am gathering support for an all-out invasion and annexation of some of the northern parts of the Far West. Eventually we will march through New Netherland and into Yankeedom. ...unless the bridge lanes are closed.
