I need small advice regarding lights. Being unemployed doesn't allow me for much budget, but I would like to get 2/3 small lamps for some indoor shots. I have been thinking about getting old desklamps and using these new powersaving bulbs, they seem to give better colour. But I would like to know what you people have been using.
I really like to use available light, especially outdoors, but I want ot broaden my experience.

I know the feeling of being on a budget. I was once there. Many people here us Five dollar Walmart Clamp lamps. You will want large bulbs and I will explain why in a minute. One of my Christmas Presents was an Alien Bee 400 pro photo strobe and I love it. Back to the need for large lights. First, are you using manual mode on you Cam? If you are then the stronger the light the better. When you use small lights you are limited (from the amount of light) in your apperture and shutter speed you can use. If you want depth of field to be large, you will need a lot of light because your apperture will be really small. Basically what I am trying to say when you do not have a large amount of light your depth of field will be limited. There are many things that are sacrificed. If you have low light levels most Cam have a problem taking pictures. Shutter speed has to be slow and the apperture in most cases has to be wide open to let the right amount of light to make a good shot. Any Cam shake and your picture is toast. So I suggest more light because you will have more options and you can adjust the Cam to the lighting to get what you want. You will have a nice wide range of options. I would say two or three Halogen 100 watt bulbs with as many Clamp lamps from Walmart will set you straight.
Know that you will be limited with that type of light too. Professional lighting can be adjusted Mine has a slide on it that will adjust 11 stops so I can adjust the amount of light. With clamp lamps you can not do that. Unless of course you hook in a dimmer switch. :-)

I juse use all the lamps in the house :( which doesn't work as well! Ah well, c'est la vie
