Very neat article about the history of Photochrom photography that began in the 1880's and some 'forgotten' photos of the time.

My favorites are 4 (Mulberry Street, NY) and 10 (woman by lake in park near large trees and flower bushes)

That's exceptionally interesting. The intersection of photography and painting/illustration. More than "hand coloring", which I'm very familiar with, it's sort of "color compositing". Fascinating. Thanks for the link.

Part way down there's a link to early images by Stanley Kubrick: these are fascinating as well (how many of us knew Kubrick was a talented still photographer in his youth?) and the commentary accompanying them is revealing.

This statement is incorrect -- the gamut of CMYK four-color printing is closer to 7000 colors than "millions" ... try converting an image with dark, vibrant blues and reds to CMYK mode and see what happens ...

This technique is also similar to the printmaking process for making monotypes.
