Hi RuthAnn,
(Feel like I'm writing my wife as that is also her name!) The "P" mode is fully automatic, hold the shutter half-way for focus and light to be set, then the rest of the way to take the shot. Check your menu setting for white balance and set it to auto. This will work in most instances. If not, under the light that you plan to use, hold a sheet of white cardboard of something in front of the light and using the menu white balance settings for custom or manual (whatever it says)press the shutter while pointing the camera towards your white cardboard. This should set the white balance for that lighting. Remember to change it back to auto when you finish.
