runs for about 2 weeks on the wetlands at a big limestone quarry in the peak district, word spread quick on facebook i went tuesday night on way home to scout there were 4 ppl there went of friday with camera and there must have been 50-60 ppl
They do that around here, what is a murmuration ? I've not seen as many birds as you captured, Do quarries attract that type of action? (we've got one a mile or so away) Now I am officially fascinated, I thought it was just some stupid thing they did to crap on my pasture! I got the Histoplasmosus (or how ever that is spelled) from starlings, so I kinda don't like them!
there is a large wet land (swamp) which they roost in in an old part of the quarry which has been closed to workings and put back to nature bull rushes etc
they roost on the ground so the wet land is perfect as predators ie foxes and cats cant get to them as its too wet
its a shame as if i could have got to the other side there was a nice golden sunset going off behind us
a murmuration is the descriptive noun for a flog of starlings
Thanks for sharing, Giles. Just amazing, and I love the choice of music. A subsequent Google search led me to site with videos of a place near Oxford where the murmuration is a nightly occurrence during the winter and the suggestion was made that it occurs in part to generate body warmth before the birds settle down for the night.
