I think I already know the answer to this, but...
If I create a object from scratch using a graphics program, is it legal in Expert Editing to use that object, combining it with my photo(s)... it would not be clipart

I'd say yes, it is legal. There is plenty of precedent, but past results are no guarantee of future validations.
