Pretty sad about the support Myself and others are getting from Apple, they have a known issue with their 27" monitor that they refuse to take care of. Forums are full of complaints about screens darkening on the left side, typically around about 18 months so computers are out of warranty unless you have extended coverage. Their are even videos on DIY repairs showing it is an issue with a soldered connection. They want 550.00 to repair something that is clearly a defect. If you have one you may want the extended coverage, if you are thinking of getting one just be warned. Apple should be ashamed that they are not taking responsibility. I loved my apple computer prior to this but if this is how they support their product I will never buy another one!
Had to laugh at the current challenge topic, "Your Darker Side", I will just take a picture of my screen...
The good news is that if history is any guide, Apple will eventually extend a repair program for this issue. The bad news is... guess what I just spent $550 on today?
I have been Apple user for many years but just the other day I was in talks with a friend about building a windows machine as my next editing option for photo & video.
I believe that they replace the whole screen panel hence the cost.
Nope, just the backlight (it's overpriced). If it were as simple as a solder, an extended repair program would have been put in place long ago. It may be that they don't have a repair program yet because they still haven't pinned down the cause. For some people, as in my case, it's the backlight, while for others it's the video card or wiring connections. The problem can be intermittent and doesn't show up in hardware diagnostics, so it's difficult to diagnose. Only the monitors and iMacs from around 2011 (same technology) and a few laptops seem to be affected, so a change in parts or manufacturing evidently resolved the issue in newer models. They DO have a repair program for 27" iMacs with the AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card.
I think they do the entire screen because the problem is where the wires to the backlight hook up. Watching a DIY video it shows it is not real accessible to solder without butchering the back of the scree around the connection.
My screen is fine at this time…fingers crossed it remains fine (mid 2010 model).
I can't complain about being looked after. They recalled the hard drive in my machine and many others and replaced for free.
Don't think anyone from the windows platform would have done that?

I thought I would be, too, but my LG that I got from my mom has a left side of the screen about 4 shades darker than the right side. Exactly split in half.

Interesting, I have heard the apple screens with this issue were supplied by LG.
My LG Optimus G phone just went out, been having major issues with the touch screen on it, and my girlfriends phone (same model) is having the same issue just not as bad. Seems like poor LG quality knows no prejudice, Apple, Windows, not even Android is safe.
