Replacement for Canon 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM len

I dropped my 17-85 lens in a field on Friday while photographing some sheep. Stupidly was switching between this and 50mm and it must have fallen out of pocket. Retraced my steps on Saturday and was unable to find it:(

Off to Venice in a few weeks time so feel like I need a replacement.

My other lenses are a Canon 50mm 1.8 and a Canon 10-22

Budget as little as possible and prepared to buy used. Just to provide a figure - $500 max.

EF-s 15-85mm, no doubt about it IMO.

Direct from Canon as a refurb for just a hair over $500.

I still miss that lens.

ETA: Sorry to hear about your lens. That's gotta hurt. :(

Hey thanks Cory, that looks like a great suggestion. Shame the Canon link is US as that would have been a good price.

Guess I would still need the 10-22 if I got a 15-85?

Just had a call from the farm and the farmer found my lens. They say it looks a bit muddy.

Don't know if it will still work after a couple of nights in a field in the rain but I sure have my fingers crossed. It will have had a lens cap and UV filter and also the plastic cap on the end that joins to the camera but I guess it is not weather sealed so may be DOA.

Of course, the price has dropped since I bought this refurbed (at Cory' suggestion) a few months ago. I really like this lens.

if you have the 10-22, get a tamron 28-75/2.8, fantastic lens on a crop for about $300 used.

Amazingly the lens appears to be working perfectly despite a few nights in a muddy fields and a few periods of rain.

Have stuck it in a bag of rice to be on the safe side - well I am sure I read that this was a good way of removing any moisture from electronic stuff.

So guess that means no new toys for me.
